Are you looking for a powerful steam locomotive for your H0 model railroad layout that reflects a special chapter in Czechoslovak railway history? The Roco 7100075 steam locomotive 555.120 of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) impresses with its distinctive design featuring a double-domed boiler and air deflectors. Fine metal wheel sets, metal driving and coupling rods, and a powerful drive system on a total of seven axles make this Era III model an attractive addition to historic freight trains. The locomotive is based on the German Class 50 and evokes the eventful history of European rail vehicles after World War II.
The German Class 50 steam locomotives were among the most versatile freight locomotives of their time. During World War II, locomotives of this class were manufactured not only in Germany but also in occupied territories. The Škoda locomotive factory in Pilsen, Czech Republic, played an important role in this. Both standard Class 50 locomotives and simplified units in the transitional wartime design—known as “ÜK” for short—were built there. After the war ended, numerous German steam locomotives remained in the territory of the reestablished Czechoslovakia. A total of 28 locomotives were taken over by the Czechoslovak State Railways and classified as Class 555.1 with road numbers 555.101 through 555.128.
The Roco 7100075 depicts the ČSD steam locomotive 555.120, commemorating the years of reconstruction of the Czechoslovak railway system. The locomotives taken over from the former German Class 50 supplemented the locomotive fleet and enabled the use of proven freight locomotives. This class also included units manufactured in Pilsen as well as individual locomotives of the transitional wartime design. The Roco 555.120 features a characteristic design from Era III and is ideal for recreating historic freight trains on Czechoslovakian routes.
A distinctive feature of the Roco 555.120 steam locomotive is its design with a double-domed boiler and air deflectors. These characteristic components define the appearance of the heavy freight locomotive and make it highly recognizable. Particularly noteworthy are the finely crafted metal wheel sets as well as the metal driving rods and coupling rods. They underscore the prototype-accurate design of the five-coupled undercarriage. The movement of the rod mechanism is particularly impressive during slow journeys through a freight yard or when pulling away with a heavy train. To ensure particularly high-quality signage, the model comes with additional etched nameplates in some cases.
The Roco 7100075 features an elaborate drive system. Two axles of the tender are powered, while power is additionally transmitted via a cardan shaft to all five driven axles of the locomotive. In total, the model thus has seven driven axles. A flywheel ensures smooth handling and quiet operation. Two axles are equipped with traction tires to improve tractive effort. These technical features make the locomotive well-suited for use with longer freight trains. With a length over buffers of 265 mm and a minimum curve radius of 358 mm, the locomotive can be used on appropriately designed H0 track layouts.
The Roco Rh 555.120 steam locomotive is supplied as an analog DC model for H0 two-wire layouts. An electrical PluX16 digital interface allows for later retrofitting with a suitable digital decoder. This enables the locomotive to be prepared for digital model railroading if desired. A digital or sound decoder is not factory-installed in this analog version. For prototypical lighting, the model features a direction-dependent two-light headlight with LEDs. The classic appearance of the steam locomotive is particularly striking when passing through a historic station or when leaving a freight yard.
The Roco 7100075 is ideal for H0 model railroads featuring Czechoslovakian-style layouts from Era III. The steam locomotive pairs particularly well with covered freight cars, open cars, stake cars, and tank cars from the ČSD. Mixed freight trains with different car types also fit perfectly with the history of this freight locomotive. To connect to compatible cars, the model features a NEM 362 coupling socket on the tender with close-coupling kinematics. Whether on a historic main line, pulling a long freight train, or pulling out of a classic freight yard—the Rh 555.120 offers numerous possibilities for varied model railroad operation.
The Roco 7100075 combines the eventful history of a former German freight locomotive with a high-quality model reproduction in the Czechoslovak State Railways livery. The double-domed boiler, the characteristic air deflectors, and the finely crafted metal components make the Rh 555.120 a striking eye-catcher. In particular, the seven-axle drive system offers excellent conditions for authentic freight train operations. For collectors of historic ČSD locomotives, enthusiasts of the German Class 50, and model railroaders focusing on Era III, this model is an attractive choice. Expand your steam locomotive collection with the Roco 555.120 and bring a fascinating piece of European railway history to your H0 model railroad layout!
