Beilhack snow blower of the German Federal Railways
Since the beginning of the railroad era it has been necessary to clear the tracks in case of snowfall or drifts. The spectrum of railroad service vehicles ranges from simple snow clearing plates to large snow plows and high-performance snow blowers. Starting in the 1960s, it became necessary for the German Federal Railroad to replace the old, still steam-powered snow blowers. In the Alps, in the Allgäu region as well as abroad, various small railcars with Beilhack diesel snow blower units were tested. One disadvantage of these vehicles was the use of an additional locomotive for the feed.
To make snow removal even more efficient, a self-propelled high-performance snow blower was developed. This was able to handle snow heights of up to 3 meters. As a result, the company would have been ideally prepared for any weather caprices. However, after extensive test runs, series delivery to the German Federal Railways was delayed until the early 1990s.
