Would you like to experience the classic steam locomotive operation of the Deutsche Bundesbahn on your H0 model railroad layout with authentic sound? The Roco 7110057 BR 24 058 steam locomotive of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) brings the unmistakable charm of Era III to your tracks. As a replica of the famous iconic locomotive 24 058, this model features small Witte air deflectors, a firebox door without a central latch, and the elegant design of a German standard-series steam locomotive. Particularly noteworthy is the return of this popular version—featuring small Witte air deflectors—to the Roco lineup. The factory-installed PluX22 sound decoder and authentic sound functions make this locomotive a special experience for discerning digital model railroaders.
The Class 24 steam locomotives were originally developed as part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s standard locomotive program for passenger service on branch lines. As trailing-tender locomotives of the 1'C h2 type, they had an axle load of 15 metric tons, making them suitable even for lines with lower load-bearing capacity. In terms of design, they were closely related to the Class 64 tender locomotive. The superheated steam twin-engine locomotive developed a power output of approximately 920 PSi and achieved a top speed of 90 km/h. As a result, these locomotives could be used not only on branch lines but also in passenger service on main lines. With a driving wheel diameter of 1,500 mm and its characteristic trailing-tender design, the BR 24 was one of the most versatile passenger locomotives of its time.
After World War II, a total of 47 Class 24 locomotives remained in the western occupation zones. The Deutsche Bundesbahn returned 42 of them to service. Over the course of their service, some of these locomotives were fitted with the smaller Witte air deflectors, which significantly altered their appearance compared to the original design featuring large Wagner air deflectors. The class remained in service with the DB until 1967. The Roco 7110057, representing the 24 058, is a particularly well-known locomotive from this Bundesbahn era and allows for the recreation of historic passenger trains from Era III.
A special highlight of the Roco BR 24 058 is the version with small Witte air deflectors. This characteristic design has returned to the product line after a long absence and gives the steam locomotive its elegant silhouette. Compared to the large Wagner air deflectors, the smaller Witte deflectors allow the boiler to stand out more prominently. Another important detail is the firebox door without a central latch, which underscores the appearance of the Bundesbahn version. For model railroaders who value particularly high-quality lettering, parts of the locomotive nameplates are also included as etched parts.
The Roco 7110057 is designed for digital DC operation on H0 two-wire layouts and comes factory-equipped with a PluX22 digital decoder with sound. The authentic sound effects bring the special atmosphere of a historic steam locomotive to your model railroad layout. Whether pulling a passenger train, traveling along a branch line, or stopping at a station—the sound features complement the operation with an impressive soundscape. With a compatible DCC digital control center, the locomotive and its digital functions can be conveniently controlled. No additional decoder retrofit is required for the intended digital operation and sound features.
To ensure smooth running, the Roco BR 24 058 features a five-pole motor with a flywheel. Two axles are powered, while two axles are equipped with traction tires to support traction. This makes the locomotive well-suited for use with compatible historic passenger trains. The direction-dependent three-light LED front signal at both ends of the locomotive complements the classic Bundesbahn design. Especially when leaving a station or traveling at dusk, this, combined with the sound functions, creates an atmospheric railroad ambiance.
The Roco 7110057 is ideal for H0 model railroads focused on the German Federal Railroad (DB) and Era III. The BR 24 058 pairs particularly well with historic converted cars, three-axle passenger cars, and classic branch-line passenger trains. Shorter passenger trains on main lines also fit the historical operating environment of this locomotive series. A branch-line layout with small stations, rural stops, and a steam locomotive depot provides the ideal backdrop. A close-coupling mechanism is provided between the locomotive and the tender. The NEM 362 coupling box with close-coupling kinematics allows for connection to suitable passenger cars. With a length over buffers of 196 mm and a minimum curve radius of 358 mm, the model can be used on appropriately designed H0 layouts.
The Roco 7110057 combines the history of a popular German standard-series steam locomotive with a highly detailed H0 model and modern sound technology. The small Witte wind deflectors, the firebox door without a central latch, and the reproduction of the famous cult locomotive 24 058 make this version a special collector’s model. The factory-installed PluX22 sound decoder, the five-pole motor, and the flywheel further ensure a varied driving experience. This steam locomotive is an excellent choice, especially for enthusiasts of historic Bundesbahn trains, fans of Era III, and discerning digital model railroaders. Get the Roco BR 24 058 with DCC sound and experience the charm of classic Bundesbahn steam operation on your H0 model railroad layout!
