The Roco 71397 H0 steam locomotive 38 2833 is a detailed model of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) from Era III (1949-1970). This special shape variant is part of the Roco edition series and shows the locomotive after its conversion in the Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk (Raw) Leipzig with Giesl flat ejector. With its characteristic appearance and the many prototypical details, this model is an enrichment for every H0 model railroad layout.
The class 38, originally known as the Prussian P 8, was one of the most successful steam locomotives of its time. After the Second World War, numerous locomotives remained in the GDR, where they continued to be used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Between 1966 and 1967, 75 of these locomotives were fitted with the Giesl flat ejector at the Leipzig works in order to increase efficiency. This conversion led to significant coal savings of 14% compared to the original standard induction hoists.
The rebuilt locomotives, called "Quetschesse" by the staff, also received Witte wind deflectors, a riveted tender and other modifications. The areas of operation of the rebuilt locomotives were limited to the Reichsbahn directorates of Cottbus, Erfurt and Magdeburg. They were mainly used in passenger service with Reko coaches and other types of coaches.
Roco stands for excellent model railroad quality, and the Roco 71397 is another example of the attention to detail that goes into every model. With fine spoked wheels, a riveted tender and cab and engine lighting that can be switched in digital mode, this model sets standards in terms of attention to detail. The driver's cab without roof attachment and the Giesl flat ejector give the locomotive its unmistakable appearance.
The model is designed for the H0 scale and a 2-wire direct current system (DC). It has coupling shafts according to NEM with KK kinematics, which enable a safe connection with other wagons. With a length over buffers of 214 mm, the locomotive is impressive and ideal for use on main lines and branch lines. The LED lighting provides a realistic change of light in white, and the cab and engine lighting provide additional authenticity.
The Roco 71397 impresses with numerous prototypical details, such as the fine spoked wheels, the Witte wind deflectors and the riveted tender. The authentic lettering and color scheme reflect the appearance of the steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era III. The delicate replica and the switchable lighting round off the model.
Roco relies on high-quality materials and precise workmanship for this model, which guarantee a long service life and reliable operation. The robust construction also makes the locomotive suitable for regular use. The accuracy of scale and the attention to detail make the Roco 71397 a special highlight for collectors and model railroaders.
The locomotive is delivered securely packaged to prevent damage during transportation. The enclosed instructions contain useful information on care and maintenance. The model is ready for immediate use and can be easily integrated into existing train compositions.
