Description

Roco 7140002 H0e Steam Locomotive Rh 399 ÖBB Era IV DC Analog

Are you looking for an Austrian narrow-gauge steam locomotive that authentically recreates the historic railway operations of the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railways on your model railroad layout? The Roco 7140002 replicates the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) steam locomotive 0399 004 as it appeared in service during the 1990s. The H0e model stands out with its characteristic trailing tender design, computer-generated numbering, and color-contrasting boiler bands. Designed for analog DC operation, this steam locomotive is ideal for classic narrow-gauge layouts and historically accurate train formations. Discover a piece of Austrian railway history in compact model train format!

The History of the ÖBB Class 399 and the Waldviertel Narrow-Gauge Railways

The history of the Class 399 dates back to the Mh-series steam locomotives, which were originally procured for the Lower Austrian State Railways. The locomotive that would later become the 399.04 was built in 1906 by the Krauss Locomotive Works in Linz and was initially put into service under the designation Mh.4. Following the electrification of the Mariazell Railway, these powerful tender locomotives found a new home on the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railways.

There, they proved particularly effective in freight service and operated on the challenging routes around Gmünd, Groß Gerungs, and Heidenreichstein. The prototype locomotives had four coupled driving axles and two trailing axles. With a top speed of 40 km/h, they were an important part of Austrian narrow-gauge rail operations for decades. As part of the introduction of computer-compatible vehicle numbers, the 399.04 was eventually designated 0399 004.

Prototype-accurate design with computer number and boiler rings

The Roco steam locomotive 0399 004 depicts the condition of the Waldviertel Narrow-Gauge Railways in the 1990s. A particularly distinctive feature is the computer number, which clearly identifies the model as belonging to the later numbering period. The contrasting-color boiler bands add visual interest and emphasize the striking design of the prototype steam locomotive.

This compact tender locomotive is an excellent fit for Austrian narrow-gauge trains of Era IV. Whether pulling historic passenger cars or hauling a short freight train, this model offers numerous possibilities for adding variety to your H0e layout.

Compact Steam Locomotive for Versatile Narrow-Gauge Operation

With its characteristic design, the Roco 399 is particularly well-suited for model railroads depicting regional rail transport in Austria. Combining it with matching narrow-gauge passenger cars allows for historic passenger trains, while suitable freight cars recreate authentic freight transport.

The locomotive also looks great on smaller layouts. With a length over the coupler of 134 mm and a minimum curve radius of 261 mm, it can be used on appropriately designed H0e tracks. This allows you to experience the charm of the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railroads even in limited space.

Technical Specifications and Analog Operation

The Roco 7140002 is designed for analog DC operation. The three-pole motor and the four powered axles form the technical foundation of the model. A buffer capacitor is also included. The PluX16 interface allows for the later installation of a compatible digital decoder, should you wish to convert your layout to digital operation at a later date.

The locomotive features a proprietary coupler and is designed for a minimum curve radius of 261 mm. This makes it suitable for H0e layouts with appropriately sized track curves. Please note that, unlike the sound version, this model is intended for analog operation and, according to the product specifications, does not have a factory-installed sound decoder.

Matching Cars for Austrian H0e Trains

For a prototypical layout, the steam locomotive can be combined with Austrian narrow-gauge passenger and freight cars. Historic ÖBB cars, which reflect the regional passenger and freight traffic of Era IV, create a particularly authentic look.

When combined with small stations, rural loading points, and a realistically designed landscape, a varied model railroad scene takes shape. In this way, the Roco steam locomotive becomes the centerpiece of a historic narrow-gauge train and adds a traditional Austrian prototype to your fleet.

Roco 7140002 – Historic Steam Locomotive for Your H0e Model Railroad

The Roco steam locomotive 0399 004 combines Austrian railway history with a distinctive model design. The computer-generated number, the color-contrasting boiler rings, and the design for analog DC operation make it an interesting addition to historically oriented narrow-gauge layouts.

Whether as a locomotive for passenger cars, for short freight trains, or as a collector’s model with ties to the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railroads—this steam locomotive offers versatile uses. Add the historic ÖBB Class 399 to your H0e collection and bring the charm of Austrian narrow-gauge railroads to your model railroad tracks!
