Description

Roco 7150002 H0e Steam Locomotive Rh 399 ÖBB Era IV DC Sound

Would you like to run an Austrian narrow-gauge steam locomotive with historical character and authentic sound features on your model railroad layout? The Roco steam locomotive 0399 004 of the Austrian Federal Railways brings the rich railway history of the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railways right to your H0e tracks. The finely detailed model recreates the condition of the locomotive as it was in the 1990s and features distinctive lettering with a computer-generated number and color-contrasting boiler rings. Thanks to the built-in sound decoder, you can also experience the unique character of a classic steam locomotive through its sounds. This makes this Roco narrow-gauge locomotive an attractive choice for enthusiasts of Austrian railway history and discerning model railroaders.

The History of the Class 399 at the ÖBB

The Class 399 steam locomotives trace their origins to the Mh class, which was originally procured for the Lower Austrian State Railways. The locomotive that later became the 399.04 was built in 1906 by the Krauss Locomotive Works in Linz and was initially put into service as the Mh.4. Following the electrification of the Mariazell Railway, these powerful support-tender locomotives found a new home on the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railways.

There, the class proved particularly reliable in freight service on the demanding routes around Gmünd, Groß Gerungs, and Heidenreichstein. The prototype locomotives had four coupled driving axles and two trailing axles. With a top speed of 40 km/h, they were an important part of Austrian narrow-gauge rail operations for decades.

Prototype-accurate design with computer number and boiler rings

The Roco model depicts the locomotive as it appeared in service in the 1990s on the Waldviertel Narrow-Gauge Railways. The lettering with the computer number 0399 004 refers to the locomotive’s later designation in the ÖBB’s rolling stock inventory. Contrasting-colored boiler bands add visual accents and highlight the meticulous design of the steam locomotive model.

The characteristic trailing tender design and compact build are perfectly suited for use on an Austrian H0e narrow-gauge layout. Whether pulling historic passenger cars or a short freight train—the locomotive offers versatile options for authentically recreating regional rail service.

Authentic steam locomotive sound for a realistic driving experience

A special highlight is the integrated sound system. The locomotive features an MX648P16 digital sound decoder, which enables authentic sound functions. This adds an extra dimension to model railroad operation, which is particularly evident during slow departures from stations, shunting maneuvers, and journeys through rural landscapes.

The integrated buffer capacitor ensures a reliable power supply for the model. Together with the flywheel and the five-pole drive concept found in comparable model railroad technology—or the three-pole motor version specified here—the technical specifications are designed for digital operation. According to the product data, this specific model features a 3-pole motor.

Technical Specifications and Compatibility

The Roco steam locomotive is designed for H0e gauge and is operated with digital DC power and DCC-compatible decoder technology. The PluX16 interface on this model is already equipped with an MX648P16 sound decoder. Therefore, retrofitting a decoder is not necessary.

With a minimum curve radius of 261 mm, the locomotive is suitable for H0e track layouts designed accordingly. The in-house coupler allows it to be coupled with compatible narrow-gauge cars. The length over the coupler is 134 mm, making the model well-suited for use on compact layouts and in short train formations.

Compatible Cars and Applications

The 0399 004 steam locomotive combines perfectly with Austrian H0e passenger cars and freight cars. Particularly well-suited are historic ÖBB narrow-gauge cars as well as freight cars designed for regional transport operations. This allows you to assemble both passenger trains and short freight trains.

This model is also an interesting addition to a layout with a Waldviertel theme. Combined with small stations, rural loading points, and a realistically designed landscape, it creates a harmonious picture of historic Austrian narrow-gauge rail transport.

Roco 7150002 – Austrian Steam Locomotive History for Your H0e Layout

The Roco steam locomotive 0399 004 combines a time-honored prototype with digital technology and authentic sound features. The 1990s-era design, the computer-generated number, and the contrasting-color boiler bands make this model a real eye-catcher on any Austrian-themed narrow-gauge layout.

Whether as a collector’s item, as a locomotive for historic passenger cars, or for varied freight trains—this H0e steam locomotive offers numerous possibilities for use. Add the distinctive ÖBB Class 399 to your fleet and bring the unmistakable charm of the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railroads to your model railroad tracks!
