Description

Roco 71778 H0 Diesel locomotive BR 120, DR, Era IV: The powerful "Taiga drum" for your model railroad

The Roco 71778 BR 120 diesel locomotive is a detailed model of one of the best-known diesel locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR). This Era IV locomotive reflects the power and iconic design of the "Taiga drum", as the class 120 is known by railroad fans due to its distinctive engine noise. With a variety of technical features, such as a red and white light change, engine room lighting and a Plux22 decoder connection, the Roco 71778 diesel locomotive is a perfect choice for model railroaders who value realistic replicas and high performance.

Historical prototype of the BR 120: The "Taiga drum" of the DR

The class 120 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn was created as part of the modernization of the traction program of the GDR in the 1960s. With the switch from steam to diesel operation, high-performance locomotives were imported from the Soviet Union, as the agreements in the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance meant that high-performance diesel locomotives could no longer be built in the GDR. The V 200 series, later known as the BR 120, was produced as the M 62 in the Luhansk locomotive factory in what is now Ukraine. This robust diesel locomotive, which was originally designed for freight transport, was later also occasionally used for passenger transport in the summer.

The locomotive with an output of 1470 kW (2000 hp) was mainly used for heavy freight traffic. By 1975, the DR had imported a total of 378 units of this series, which were nicknamed the "Taiga drum" due to their characteristic engine noise. The locomotive remained in service in unified Germany until 1995. Today, only a few examples still exist, which are preserved in museums and remind us of the eventful history of the BR 120.

Technical details of the Roco BR 120 diesel locomotive

The Roco BR 120 offers a variety of technical features that make it ideal for demanding model railroaders. With a length over buffers of 202 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the locomotive is ideal for H0 gauge layouts. A powerful motor with flywheel mass drives all six axles, ensuring strong tractive power and smooth running characteristics. The model has a Plux22 interface, which makes it easy to retrofit a decoder. This means that lighting functions such as the engine room lighting and driver's cab lighting can be controlled digitally, providing a realistic operating experience.

Lighting and light functions

The Roco 71778 diesel locomotive is equipped with modern LED lighting, which ensures uniform and reliable lighting. A red and white light change is also available, which changes automatically with the direction of travel and provides additional authenticity on your layout. The engine room and driver's cab lighting can be switched separately in digital mode, providing even more realism. This lighting gives the locomotive an impressive appearance, especially in darkened layouts.

Detailed reproduction of the running gear

The detailed design of the running gear that Roco has realized with the BR 120 is particularly worth mentioning. In addition to the precisely crafted bogies, the model also has complete brake air lines and air tanks that are in no way inferior to the original. Individual details such as free-standing handle bars and attached windshield wipers raise the model to a special level of quality. This detailed reproduction shows the high level of craftsmanship of Roco and makes the model a visual highlight on your H0 layout.

Direct current system and simple digitization

The Roco BR 120 is supplied for direct current (DC) systems, which makes it compatible with most H0 gauge systems. Thanks to the Plux22 interface, the locomotive is easy to digitize so that you can retrofit the versatile lighting functions and possible sound equipment. Although the locomotive can be operated in analog mode, digital operation is recommended in order to enjoy full control over the lighting and control functions.
