Are you looking for an exceptional Deutsche Bahn diesel locomotive that will captivate you with its fascinating history, distinctive details, and true-to-prototype design? Then the Roco 7300118 BR 217 017-3 diesel locomotive is an excellent choice for your H0 model railroad layout. This traffic-red locomotive from the legendary V-160 family embodies a special chapter in German railway history and brings the atmosphere of freight transport from Eras V and VI to your model railroad.
As an attractive variant featuring a Voith cooling system, the model impresses with its meticulous reproduction, numerous separately attached details, and the prototypical front design without a 1,000-volt heating cable. Particularly noteworthy are the attached parts, some of which are produced using etching technology, as well as the finely crafted wheel sets with low flanges.
With its powerful drive, classic traffic-red paint scheme, and the option for digital retrofitting, the Roco BR 217 017-3 is an interesting addition for enthusiasts of German diesel locomotives.
The Class 217 is one of the rarest and, at the same time, most interesting members of the well-known V-160 locomotive family of the Deutsche Bundesbahn.
While numerous locomotives in this family were built in large numbers, only 15 units of the Class 217 were produced.
The locomotives were developed for versatile use in passenger and freight service and originally featured special technical equipment.
A distinctive feature of the Class 217 was the combination of a traction diesel engine and a separate heating diesel engine.
The additional engine was originally intended to supply electrical power to passenger cars. This allowed the locomotives to be used in both passenger and freight service.
This design distinguished the Class 217 from many other locomotives in the V-160 family and made it a technically interesting special-purpose design.
The 217 017 diesel locomotive was built by Krupp in 1968 and delivered to the Deutsche Bundesbahn.
For many years, the locomotive was based in Regensburg and performed various tasks in both passenger and freight service.
In 2000, the locomotive was transferred to the Mühldorf depot. There, it was primarily used for freight service and was now painted in the typical traffic-red livery of Deutsche Bahn AG.
In 2008, the locomotive underwent another simplified general inspection. As part of this work, the diesel heating engine—which was no longer needed—was removed and replaced with ballast.
This adapted the locomotive for its remaining duties in freight service.
The 217 017-3 held a special place within its small series.
As one of the last remaining locomotives of its kind, it remained in service with DB Schenker Rail until the end of 2011 and was the last operational Class 217 locomotive at Deutsche Bahn.
In February 2014, it was finally taken out of service and sold to the Pfalzbahn.
This extraordinary operational history makes the 217 017-3 a particularly interesting subject for model railroading enthusiasts and collectors.
With the Roco 7300118, you receive a carefully crafted replica of the 217 017-3 diesel locomotive as it appeared during eras V and VI.
The model features the characteristic traffic-red paint scheme of Deutsche Bahn AG and impresses with numerous prototypical details.
In particular, the special version with a Voith cooling system and the modified front design make this variant especially interesting.
A special feature of this version is the reproduction of the Voith cooling system.
This visually distinguishes the locomotive from other variants of the V-160 family and contributes significantly to the authentic representation of the BR 217 017-3.
Roco takes this distinctive feature into account in the model’s design, thereby enabling a true-to-prototype reproduction of this iconic locomotive.
The front of the locomotive was designed without a 1,000-volt heating cable, in accordance with the depicted operational condition.
This design reflects the locomotive’s later period of service, during which it was primarily used for freight service and the original electric train heating was no longer required.
It is precisely these kinds of differences that make the various operational states of historic diesel locomotives particularly interesting for model railroading enthusiasts.
The Roco BR 217 017-3 impresses with its numerous separately attached snap-on parts.
Some of these delicate components were produced using etching technology, which allows for particularly fine structures and a representation faithful to the prototype.
This high-quality detailing underscores the model’s unique character and ensures a compelling overall impression both on the layout and in a display case.
Another highlight of the Roco 7300118 is the wheel sets with low flanges.
These ensure a particularly realistic representation of the undercarriage and make the locomotive appear even more true to the prototype on the track.
The finely crafted wheels really come into their own, especially on detailed model railroads with carefully designed track layouts.
For model railroaders who have different requirements for their track layout, Roco offers matching wheel sets with 1.2 mm high flanges as replacement parts.
These are available under part numbers 145433 and 145435.
This allows you to adapt the locomotive’s wheel set configuration to the specific requirements of your model railroad layout.
The Roco BR 217 017-3 is designed for analog DC operation.
A powerful drive with a flywheel ensures smooth running characteristics and keeps the locomotive running quietly.
All four axles are powered. One axle is equipped with traction tires to improve power transfer to the rails.
This makes the locomotive ideal for use with a variety of freight trains.
The model features LED lighting with three white headlights and two red tail lights.
The lights change depending on the direction of travel, providing a realistic representation of locomotive operation.
This lighting contributes to a convincing overall impression, especially when traveling on main and branch lines.
Although the Roco 7300118 is supplied as an analog DC model, it is already prepared for a future digital upgrade.
The integrated PluX22 interface allows for the installation of a compatible digital decoder.
This allows model railroaders to integrate the locomotive into a digital H0 DC layout as needed.
The option for retrofitting also makes the model appealing to model railroaders who initially run their layout in analog mode but plan to expand it to digital later on.
The Class 217 was originally intended for both passenger and freight service. In its later years of service, its duties increasingly focused on freight service.
These locomotives were in service particularly in southern Germany, including the area around Mühldorf.
With the Roco BR 217 017-3, you can therefore recreate numerous typical freight transport scenes from Deutsche Bahn AG.
Various freight cars from Epochs V and VI are suitable for creating realistic train formations.
Tank cars, sliding-wall cars, open freight cars, covered freight cars, and flat cars are an excellent fit for the later operational environment of this diesel locomotive.
Transfer trains and mixed freight trains can also be convincingly depicted with the BR 217.
This makes the model particularly suitable for layouts based on southern German prototypes, non-electrified main lines, and varied freight traffic.
You will receive the Deutsche Bahn AG BR 217 017-3 diesel locomotive in the traffic-red livery of Eras V and VI.
The model is designed for analog DC operation and features a PluX22 interface for future digitalization.
Features include the prototypical Voith cooling system, the front end without a 1,000-volt heating cable, numerous separately attached details, and the finely crafted wheel sets with low flanges.
LED lighting with direction-dependent headlights and taillights is already integrated.
Alternative wheel sets with higher flanges are available separately as replacement parts.
The Roco 7300118 is an interesting choice for model railroading enthusiasts who are fascinated by the history of German diesel locomotives.
With only 15 prototype locomotives built, the Class 217 is one of the rarest members of the V-160 family.
The 217 017-3 holds a special place due to its long operational history and its status as the last operational DB locomotive of its class.
Technically, the model also impresses with its special body variant, detailed design, and reliable drive system.
This makes the locomotive suitable for both regular layout operation and as an attractive collector’s item.
With the Roco 7300118 H0 diesel locomotive BR 217 017-3, you’ll be adding an exceptional representative of the legendary V-160 family to your model railroad layout.
The traffic-red paint scheme, the prototypical Voith cooling system, and the characteristic front design make this variant a real eye-catcher.
