Roco 73040 steam locomotive BR 44, DRG, Ep. II Product Details

Description

The standard locomotive program of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) also included the development of a powerful freight locomotive. The locomotive, known as the BR 44, with a drilling engine was expected to be able to haul freight trains of up to 1,200 tons in low mountain ranges and up to 600 tons over steep ramps. In 1926, the first 10 machines with the 1'E h3 axle arrangement were delivered. This locomotive only went into series production from 1937 onwards, following the increased demands of train haulage, and was procured in large numbers in various versions. Until they were replaced by modern diesel and electric locomotives, the class 44 locomotives formed the backbone of the heavy freight train service throughout Germany.

The photographic paint was a special paint job applied by the locomotive factories to special locomotive specimens in order to achieve a better representation in photographs at the time. This consisted of washable (lime) paint and was only applied for the purpose of photographic work.
