About the original: The DB class 218 is one of the most widely used DB diesel locomotives. This is mainly due to the fact that the class has proven itself since 1968 in long-distance and local traffic, but also in freight traffic. In 1968, 12 prototypes were produced, which were completely convincing, resulting in a total of 399 series models between 1971 and 1979. These were also convincing, so that in 2008, a full 40 years after the first prototypes, 220 were still in operation. However, this was not only due to the quality of the 218 alone, but also to the sluggish expansion of the electrification of the rail network and the fact that successors such as the BR 245 were not convincing.
About the model: With this model, Roco depicts a DB AG BR 218 in its current operating condition, around the year 2021, with white and red IC paintwork. Accordingly, the model has various features that distinguish today's 218s from their original state. These include, for example, tail lights, which are attached to the outer headlight positions and a roof version with a long engine cover for the MTU 4000 engine. A large number of individually attached plug-in parts, some of which are etched, and the prototypical low wheel flanges complete the outstanding appearance. The model is driven by a powerful and durable motor with flywheel mass, which drives all 4 axles of the model and thus ensures great power transmission and outstanding running characteristics. A Plux22 interface with a sound decoder installed on the front enables the use of a wide range of light and sound functions.
