With increasing age, the Re 421 fleet of SBB Cargo was one of the first locomotives of the entire Re 4/4 family to be sold. The Re 421 series originated from the last delivered Re 4/4 II series 11371 - 11397, built between 1983 and 1985, which were rebuilt for use in Germany between 2002 and 2004. The 26 locomotives (excluding 11382, which was withdrawn from service in 2002 due to a fire) were intended to supplement the Re 482 fleet delivered from 2002 for cross-border traffic between Germany and Switzerland and were also intended for domestic German traffic for SBB Cargo Germany. The locomotives were later largely leased to foreign rail transport companies. While the leasing of locomotives to private companies declined with the increasing number of new locomotives and leasing companies entering the market, the Re 421s were increasingly displaced to Switzerland. Because the locomotives were never upgraded with air conditioning and ETCS equipment, which was becoming increasingly important in Switzerland, the locomotives were put up for sale early on. Widmer Rail Services (WRS) was the first company to secure the two Re 421 373 + 381 locomotives in January 2018, which today provide a valuable service for the Swiss-based company.
