In 2005, the joint venture Cisalpino - consisting of SBB and Trenitalia - leased six class Re 484 locomotives to optimize cross-border EuroCity traffic between Switzerland and Italy. The locomotives were designed in a striking silver, red and light blue livery and made it possible to run a continuous service without changing locomotives at the border - a milestone in modern long-distance transportation. Following the delayed delivery of new multiple units, Cisalpino service ended at the end of 2007.
