Are you looking for an exceptional electric locomotive that combines fascinating railway history, the highest level of detail, and impressive digital sound? The Roco 7510241 brings the ES 499.1003 electric locomotive of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) to your H0 model railroad layout as an elaborate new design. This Era IV model captivates with its original factory finish, detailed roof equipment, delicate bogies, and finely crafted spoked wheels. A special highlight is the integrated “Dynamic Sound” package with two speakers, which delivers a particularly powerful, deep sound. Combined with the extensive digital lighting functions, this historic Škoda multi-system locomotive becomes a true experience on your model railroad tracks.
The ES 499.1003 electric locomotive belongs to the well-known ES 499.1 series of the former Czechoslovak State Railways. These advanced multi-system locomotives were developed and built by the long-established rail vehicle manufacturer Škoda in Pilsen.
The ES 499.1 series was among the most technically advanced electric locomotives of its time. As the world’s first multi-system electric locomotives with thyristor pulse control, they enabled stepless and exceptionally precise power control.
A distinctive feature of the Czechoslovak railway network was the use of two different power systems. While numerous lines were electrified with 3 kV direct current, other lines used a 25 kV, 50 Hz alternating current system.
To enable nonstop train journeys without time-consuming locomotive changes, Škoda developed the powerful dual-system locomotive ES 499.1. With the Roco model, you can recreate this fascinating development in European railway technology on a 1:87 scale.
Roco presents the ES 499.1003 electric locomotive as a completely new design, incorporating numerous characteristic features of the historic prototype. The original ČSD factory configuration makes the model particularly appealing to collectors who value authentic operational conditions and historical vehicle variants.
Particularly impressive is the elaborate design of the roof area. The extensive electrical equipment of the multi-system locomotive has been reproduced with numerous details, giving the model a distinctly technical appearance.
The pantographs feature an innovative mounting system that enhances the delicate representation of the roof equipment. The bogies, too, have been crafted with particular care and impress with their finely detailed construction.
Another highlight is the delicately designed spoked wheels, which underscore the locomotive’s characteristic appearance and are particularly striking when the model passes by at a slow speed.
The striking body shape, the detailed roof equipment, and the numerous finely crafted components make the Roco ES 499.1003 a truly exceptional addition to your H0 model railroad layout.
A special feature of the Roco 7510241 is the included accessories for a particularly prototypical display. The package includes additional track clearers and a closed-type air tank.
These components allow for a particularly authentic display of the locomotive in the showcase and highlight the high level of detail in the new design.
In addition, parts of the locomotive’s lettering are included as fine etched parts. These allow you to further refine the locomotive’s appearance and effectively highlight the historical design of the ČSD locomotive.
These additional details offer special added value, especially for collectors who like to view their models up close or display them in a display case.
The Roco 7510241 comes factory-equipped with a DCC sound decoder and features a PluX22 interface. A special highlight is the integrated “Dynamic Sound” package, which uses two speakers to ensure improved sound reproduction.
Thanks to the special sound system, the electric locomotive’s operating sounds have a particularly effective, deep resonance. This adds an impressive acoustic dimension to digital model railroading.
Imagine the ES 499.1003 waiting at the station for its next assignment. After a express train is coupled up, the locomotive slowly begins to move, accompanied by appropriate ambient sounds, and leaves the platform. The Dynamic Sound system is particularly impressive during slow starts and varied train journeys.
The combination of elaborate redesign and high-quality sound technology makes the Roco ES 499.1003 a special experience for discerning digital model railroaders.
The Roco ES 499.1003 also offers extensive lighting features. The locomotive features LED headlights with direction-dependent lighting that cycles between three white headlights and two red taillights.
In digital mode, various additional lighting functions can be activated. These include the cab lighting, the control panel lighting, and the engine room lighting.
In particular, the separately controllable control panel lighting enables a realistic depiction of the engineer’s workstation. The engine room lighting also provides interesting glimpses into the locomotive’s technical equipment.
Whether preparing the locomotive at the depot, during a nighttime station scene, or on a longer express train journey—the extensive digital lighting functions enable a variety of operating scenarios.
The Roco ES 499.1003 also impresses technically with high-performance features designed for demanding model railroad operation. All four axles are powered, ensuring reliable power transmission to the rails.
An integrated flywheel supports smooth running and contributes to harmonious motion. One axle is equipped with traction tires, which improve the locomotive’s tractive effort.
For coupling with compatible passenger and freight cars, the model features a NEM 362 coupling shaft with close-coupling kinematics. The specified minimum curve radius is 358 mm.
With a length over buffers of 193 mm, the H0 model features the characteristic proportions of its historic prototype.
Development of the ES 499.1 series began against the backdrop of the various power systems in the Czechoslovak railway network. To simplify domestic and international train service, ČSD needed high-performance locomotives that could operate on both direct current and alternating current.
The first prototypes were built in 1980 and 1981. Series production of the modern dual-system locomotives began at Škoda in Pilsen in 1984.
The four-axle locomotives had a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and were approximately 16.8 meters long. With a service weight of about 87 metric tons and a top speed of 120 km/h, they were suitable for a wide range of tasks in passenger and freight service.
The four traction motors developed a power output of approximately 3,480 kW under the direct current system. Under alternating current, approximately 3,060 kW was available.
The modern thyristor pulse control system was particularly advanced. It enabled precise control of the drive power and represented a significant technical advancement over older electromechanical control systems.
With their multi-system capability and modern electrical equipment, the ES 499.1 series locomotives were among the most remarkable developments in European electric locomotive engineering.
Would you like to assemble a historic Czechoslovakian express train or recreate the diverse freight operations of the ČSD? The Roco ES 499.1003 offers numerous possibilities for this.
For example, combine the electric locomotive with matching ČSD express train cars from Era IV. The locomotive looks particularly impressive at the head of a long international passenger train on an electrified main line.
This versatile multi-system locomotive can also be used realistically in freight train applications. For example, assemble a mixed freight train with covered cars, open freight cars, and tank cars.
The transition between different power systems creates a special model railroad scene. Design a larger station with electrified track sections and let the ES 499.1003 demonstrate its versatile capabilities.
The model is designed for digital operation on H0 two-wire DC layouts. To use the extensive sound and light functions, you’ll need a compatible DCC digital controller.
The combination of the original factory design, elaborate roof detailing, and intricate undercarriage details makes the Roco ES 499.1003 an exceptional addition for discerning model railroading enthusiasts.
Collectors of Eastern European electric locomotives, enthusiasts of historic Škoda vehicles, and model railroaders specializing in Era IV rail transport will find this model to be particularly true to its prototype.
The finely detailed spoked wheels, the additional accessories for display in a showcase, and the extensive digital lighting functions underscore the high-quality character of this elaborate new design.
The Dynamic Sound Package with two speakers also provides an impressive acoustic driving experience and makes this electric locomotive a special highlight in digital model railroading.
