In 2019, Deutsche Bahn invited tenders for the procurement of up to 90 high-speed trains in order to quickly and efficiently expand its long-distance services. The ICE 3neo, based on the proven Velaro platform from Siemens, was developed to reach speeds of 300 to 320 km/h and to be designed for cross-border operations in Belgium and the Netherlands. The trains of the 408 series will enter passenger service from December 2022 and set new standards in terms of comfort, efficiency and sustainability.
