To replace the outdated M 131.1 series railcars, the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) procured new M 152.0 series two-axle diesel railcars from 1975. These vehicles were equipped with a 155 kW six-cylinder in-line engine and reached a maximum speed of 80 km/h. The passenger compartment was equipped with 56 passenger cars. There were 56 seats available in the passenger compartment, which made the railcars ideal for local transport. The robust vehicles quickly became a familiar sight on the secondary and main lines of what was then Czechoslovakia.

After the division of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the vehicles were divided between the newly founded state railroads ČD (Czech Railways) and ZSR (Slovak Railways). Since 2004, the Slovakian vehicles have been part of the fleet of ZSSK (Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko), the Slovakian state railroad.
