With the Roco 78249 BR 18.4 steam locomotive, Roco is bringing a legend of German railroad history back to the model railway layout. The originally Bavarian S 3/6, affectionately known as the "Queen of steam locomotives", was the backbone of the German express train service for decades - even after the appearance of the BR 01. Its elegant design, its enormous mileage and its versatility made it irreplaceable. It was also present on German lines in Era III and proudly bore the DB logo - a reminiscence of its long service life.
The model from Roco depicts the BR 18.4 with a high level of detail and shows it in the classic DB design: with silver boiler rings, sleeve buffers with white buffer rings and the characteristic DB cookie on the driver's cab. The locomotive is equipped with fine metal spoke wheels and driving wheels with a fine-scale profile. The air and feed pump and brake shoes at wheel arch level emphasize the technical fidelity to the prototype. An etched sign set is included for individual design. The locomotive can be retrofitted with a Seuthe No. 11 smoke generator for even more authenticity.
The locomotive is technically impressive with a powerful drive on five axles, two of which have traction tires. The flywheel mass ensures smooth running characteristics. In digital operation, the MX645R decoder offers extensive sound functions that round off the experience perfectly. The locomotive is designed for alternating current (AC) operation and is equipped with an NEM 652 interface. The headlights change over depending on the direction of travel via a 2 headlight. A close coupler link is used to couple the locomotive to the tender; a separate coupler is installed on the tender.
With a length over buffers of 246 mm and a minimum radius of 419 mm, the model can be used flexibly on both classic and modern layouts. The Roco 78249 BR 18.4 is a must for fans of historic express steam locomotives who value attention to detail, sound and prototype history.
