About the model: The class 50.40 steam locomotive is a German State Railroad model and is from Era IV. The locomotive is driven on 2 axles of the tender and via the cardan shaft on all 5 driving axles of the locomotive. The model is characterized among other things by the finest detailed design with many separately attached plug-in parts. All further details can be found under the features.
About the prototype: The steam locomotive class 50.40 of the German State Railroad of the GDR was a further development of the DRG class 50 freight locomotive series. When designing the locomotive, special care was taken to use many of the same assemblies as the BR 23.10 passenger steam locomotive developed in parallel in order to save costs for repairs and spare parts stocks. The manufacturer VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx in Babelsberg delivered a total of 88 locomotives between 1956 and 1960, which were put into service with the road numbers 50 4001 to 50 4088. With an axle load of 15 tons, the locomotives could be used freely, but they were mainly used in the northern directorates of the DR and ran in front of passenger and freight trains. Due to the fragile sheet metal frame, the locomotives were withdrawn from train service by 1980 and continued to be used as stationary heating units.
