Are you looking for a typical, historically accurate freight car for your Era IV model railroad layout? The Tillig 95582 TT Open Freight Car Om of the Deutsche Reichsbahn is a true workhorse from the 1960s through the 1980s. Based on an export design by VEB Waggonbau Niesky, this model combines functionality, history, and technical expertise—precisely rendered at a 1:120 scale.
Originally, this car type was manufactured in 1951 for the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) as the Vtu class—in a series of 250 units. The LOWA design office was responsible for the development, which was based on the Omm “Klagenfurt” model but featured a car body that was 900 mm shorter. Following delivery to the ČSD, the Deutsche Reichsbahn also added approximately 250 cars to its own fleet—a typical example of technical cooperation within the Eastern Bloc.
In the 1960s, many of these cars underwent a general overhaul. During this process, the original wooden side walls were replaced with modern, welded sheet metal walls—a more durable and low-maintenance design that is realistically reflected in this Tillig model. Thus, the car showcases the typical blend of original construction and GDR modernization.
With a length over buffers of 76 mm, the car is ideal for short shunting units, transfer traffic, and authentic branch line scenes. The intricate details and accurate DR lettering round out the model’s prototypical accuracy. A NEM-compliant coupler mount and close-coupling kinematics guarantee reliable operation on model railroads.
Whether used for bulk goods, scrap, lumber, or building materials—the Om car is a true all-rounder. Combine it with other DR freight cars such as the OOt, Gbs, or stake cars to create realistic Era IV freight trains. Typical locomotives like the BR 110, BR 118, or BR 106 also pair perfectly with this model.
With the Tillig 95582 TT Om, you get a model that’s not only technically impressive but also historically interesting. For anyone who wants to recreate GDR freight traffic in detail, this car is the perfect choice—compact, prototypical, and versatile.
