038 382 (until 1968: 38 2383) was the second-to-last "Mohican" of the once numerous class 38.10-40 (ex Prussian P 8) steam locomotives at DB and had to retire from service on April 29, 1974. A long boiler crack had put her out of action shortly before the deadline in July. Together with her two sisters (038 771 and 772), she had been based at Rottweil depot since the beginning of July 1973 and hauled passenger trains in the Black Forest and Neckar Valley. After its retirement, it found a worthy place in the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg, now again under its old number 38 2383. The P 8 had developed into one of the most successful Prussian locomotive designs ever. By 1923, over 3,500 of the almost 1,200 hp locomotives had been built for German railroad administrations alone, and almost all German locomotive factories were involved in their construction. Just over 1,200 locomotives made their way to the Bundesbahn after the Second World War. It was not until the end of the 1950s that the stocks began to thin out noticeably.
