Bemo 1258131 H0m electric locomotive Ge 4/4 II 631 "Untervaz", RhB, Ep. IV-V Product Details
26 years after the Ge 4/4 I 601-604 entered service as the RhB's first bogie electric locomotive with an output of 1184 kW, the thyristor-controlled Ge 4/4 II 611-620 set new standards in train haulage on Graubünden's meter gauge tracks in 1973. The modern 1700 kW machines with a maximum speed of 90 km/h replaced various series of the first generation of locomotives with rod drive and outdated performance and maximum speed. They followed two construction service vehicles previously procured with thyristor technology and six suburban railcars; in addition, BLS's experience with its standard-gauge Re 4/4 was incorporated into the development.
The ten machines built by SLM/BBC and painted green met the requirements profile and almost reached the performance program of the six-axle and heavier Ge 6/6 II 701-707. Thanks to their multiple control, the heaviest trains could be hauled in double traction on the main network, so that the machines became the universal locomotive for express, regional and freight train service. A second series followed in 1984 with the 13 Ge 4/4 II 621-633; they were already delivered in red livery. Like the other Ge 4/4 I and Ge 6/6 II, the locomotives equipped with single-arm pantographs were given emblems and baptismal names.
With the conversion of the Arosa Railway to alternating voltage in 1997 and the procurement of driving trailers, not only did the area of operation expand, they also made a considerable contribution to the economic shunting of individual sections of line. Externally, the appearance of the locomotives changed only slightly: modernized pantograph contact strips, additional roof insulators, rectangular headlights, additional rear-view mirrors and changes to the electric or pneumatic coupling elements on the ends are relatively few changes for around 50 years of service. Since 2007, some machines have carried eye-catching advertising lettering.
