Background: New Regulations, New Cars

As a result of changes to hazardous materials regulations, the RhB had to adapt its tank car fleet. While newer cars such as the Uah 8131–8140 were modernized, retrofitting older models was not cost-effective. Instead, starting in the late 1990s, a total of 18 new articulated tank cars with a capacity of 42,000 liters were built—today’s Za 8101–8118. Some older bogies were reused in their construction, but this led to restrictions on the payload.

Technically adapted—now reliably in service

The leaf-sprung bogies of the 8155–8162 series initially used caused repeated derailments when the cars were overloaded due to their lower load-bearing capacity. Starting in 2007, these were therefore gradually replaced with more robust bogies from decommissioned Gak large-capacity freight cars—as seen in the prototype of the Za 8103 offered here.
