Description

Brawa 50524 DB Ucs 909 Dust Container Car, Era IV Product Details

Based on the original: The Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), in collaboration with Waggonunion, developed a new 2-axle bulk cargo car with two vertical containers. Westwagon delivered the first ten cars to the DB in 1953 for testing. Since they were still equipped with a Hik braking system, these were designated Kd 54. In addition, like the subsequent 150 cars supplied by Talbot and Westwagon, they featured a double-cradle running gear. Since this, in combination with the very specific underframe design, led to problems, all subsequent deliveries were equipped with a single-cradle running gear. After just 50 cars, the container volume was increased to 2 × 13.5 m³. The cars proved very successful, resulting in the procurement of a total of 1,232 Kds 54 cars by 1965. For lighter bulk materials, 1,293 Kds 56 cars with 2 × 17.5 m³ containers were built in parallel. Due to the 4 m³ larger containers, these cars were correspondingly taller. To secure parked cars, some of the Kds 54/56 models were equipped with a handbrake operable from the platform. In contrast to other new DB freight cars, where the handbrake platform was bolted to the underframe, it was directly integrated here. As a result, the length over buffers (LüP) of the cars equipped in this way remained unchanged, and only the tare weight increased. Given the total number of over 2,500 cars built, the Kds 54/56 were relatively rarely equipped with a handbrake. With the introduction of the 12-digit UIC number, the Kds 54 were renumbered as Ucs 908. The Kds 56 were similarly reclassified as Ucs 909. For many years, both types formed the backbone of DB’s dry bulk freight cars. The first disposals occurred in 1967, when 86 cars were sold. Further sales to EVA and VTG followed in later years. In the 1990s, DB AG transferred most of its cars to its subsidiary MEG. The remaining DB AG cars were primarily leased out or used, for example, for the internal transport of brake sand for traction units. In addition to cement, the cars also transported various other powdered goods over the years. Among the known examples are: stone meal, quartz sand, kieserite, gypsum, sodium sulfate, Thomas salt, sugar, salt, and aluminum hydroxide. The cars were generally permanently stationed at a single rail yard.
