Description

Brawa 61216 diesel locomotive BR V160 069 der DB, Ep. III Product Details

About the prototype: Until the mid-1950s, engine technology did not allow a mainline diesel locomotive to be built with only one engine system and sufficient power. Consequently, the V200 and V200.1 series were created, which were equipped with two drive systems in order to fulfill their performance program. However, the manufacturers were working flat out on more powerful engines and by the end of the decade, an output of 1400kW from just one engine was no longer an illusion. As early as 1956, Krupp therefore began developing a medium-duty mainline diesel locomotive with one engine, steam heating and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. In 1960, Krupp and Henschel delivered a total of ten pre-series machines.

Nine of them were nicknamed "Lollo" in reference to Gina Lollobrigida because of their appearance. The tenth locomotive already had a sober, much more angular shape, which was significantly cheaper to produce and was therefore adopted for the series. The locomotives proved themselves in freight and passenger service and were built in series after extensive testing from 1964 to 1968. Krupp, Henschel, KHD, Krauss-Maffei and MaK supplied a total of 214 series locomotives. They were used throughout Germany. With the delivery of the BR 218 and the increasing use of electric train heating, it was used more and more in freight traffic. After the prototype locomotives had been retired by 1984, the series locomotives began to be withdrawn from 1993. More and more railcars were used for passenger services, which led to a further displacement of diesel locomotives. When freight traffic declined, the DR provided the BR 232, which made it possible to replace a double traction. By 2004, all 216s had been taken out of service. However, numerous locomotives went to private rail transport companies in Germany and abroad, and some have now even returned and are in use in near-original condition. The DB Museum receives, among others, the 216 003 in LĂĽbeck and the 216 067 in Koblenz.

About the model: The DB Class V160 diesel locomotive is from Era III and is available in a scale of 1:160 thanks to the manufacturer BRAWA.
