The class 212 emerged from the V 100 type program of the 1950s and was delivered between 1962 and 1965 in 380 units as a more powerful version of the V 100.10. With its 1350 hp, it was predestined for mixed service on non-electrified branch lines. From 1987 onwards, many locomotives were painted in the old DB red livery - including the 212 176-2.
