Description

Piko 40512 N diesel locomotive BR 221 blau beige, DB, Ep. IV Product Details

Piko 40512 N Diesel locomotive BR 221 blue beige, DB, Ep. IV, N Diesel locomotive BR 221 DB IV

With the Piko 40512 BR 221 diesel locomotive, PIKO brings one of the most legendary machines of the German Federal Railroad to the N scale layout - now in the typical Era IV livery in blue-beige. The locomotive, also known under its original designation V200.1, was a symbol of powerful diesel traction on main and branch lines in the 1970s and 1980s.

Prototypical design with modern technology

The elegant design, combined with the striking blue and beige color scheme, has been precisely implemented in the model. PIKO ensures a realistic appearance with finely engraved details and sharp printing, which is convincing both when stationary and when running. The LED lighting with direction of travel-dependent light change in white/red provides harmonious lighting effects.

Proven drive technology for smooth operation

Thanks to two traction tires and a powerful motor, the class 221 offers very good driving characteristics - even with long trains. The locomotive is ideally suited for analog operation, but can also be easily retrofitted digitally thanks to the Next18 digital interface (NEM 662).

For main and branch line scenarios in Era IV

With a length over buffers of 115 mm and a minimum radius of 192 mm, the locomotive is ideally suited to both large layouts and more compact N-gauge layouts. It can be used flexibly in both freight and passenger traffic and perfectly rounds off any Era IV collection.

Frequently asked questions

Question: Which scale and power system is the Piko 40512 designed for?
Answer:

The diesel locomotive is an N-scale model in 1:160 for analogue two-rail DC layouts. It can be operated on compatible N-scale track with a 9 mm gauge. This version is not suitable for H0 track or three-rail AC systems.

Question: Which prototype does the model represent, and which trains does it suit?
Answer:

The model represents a Deutsche Bundesbahn Class 221 diesel locomotive in the blue and beige livery of Era IV. The class was originally designated V 200.1. It is particularly suitable for passenger and freight trains representing main-line and branch-line operation during the 1970s and 1980s.

Question: Is the locomotive already digital or equipped with sound?
Answer:

The Piko 40512 is supplied for analogue operation without sound. It has a Next18 interface conforming to NEM 662 for the later installation of a suitable digital decoder. Adding sound also requires a compatible sound decoder, a speaker and sufficient installation space inside the locomotive.

Question: Which drive, lighting and coupling features does the locomotive offer?
Answer:

A powerful motor and two traction tyres support reliable operation and pulling performance. The LED lighting changes between white headlights and red tail lights according to the direction of travel. A NEM coupling pocket with a close-coupling mechanism makes it easier to combine the locomotive with suitably equipped N-scale rolling stock.

Question: Which dimensions and curve radii should be considered?
Answer:

The locomotive measures 115 mm over the buffers and requires a minimum curve radius of 192 mm. It can therefore be used on relatively compact N-scale layouts, provided that the curves and points support this radius. The recommended age is 14 years and above, and the model is not suitable for children under three because of small parts.
