From the early days of the railroad until today, the end of a train must be marked by appropriate end signals. In principle, no train may run without an end signal. Until 1935, the daytime signal consisted of two square red and white plates, the so-called upper carriage plates, and a round end plate on the buffer beam. At night, the panes had to be replaced by red lanterns. As freight trains on the state railroads ran almost exclusively during the day, the unlit panes were usually found on these.
