At the beginning of the 1990s, the class 216 had reached the end of its useful life. Due to the allocation of locomotives and personnel to the business units, the 216 found itself at DB Cargo, as the freight division was called at the time. Since, in contrast to earlier years, the focus was on the rapid implementation of the "corporate identity", numerous locomotives of all classes were repainted.
