After the DR already had numerous class 130 and 131 locomotives in service, but the desired universal use was not possible due to the lack of a train heating system, the breakthrough finally came with the class 132. The locomotives delivered in the first year were almost without exception distributed to important railroad depots with train hauling tasks in international passenger and freight traffic.
