About the prototype: With the development of the E44 series, an absolute icon of German railroad history was created at the beginning of the 1930s. Technical innovations, such as the introduction of the Tatzlaer drive and the abandonment of running axles, laid the foundation for the success of the class. The locomotives ran on the electrified networks of southern and central Germany from the 1930s to the 1980s, with some locomotives still in service as heating locomotives in 1991. The class E44 was the first electric locomotive to be produced in Germany with more than 100 units. The locomotive was used for both freight and passenger services for a long time.

The occupation status after the Second World War made it impossible to develop new locomotives, which is why another 7 locomotives were produced in West Germany. The DB had a total of 125 locomotives, which were converted for various tasks. Some were fitted with electric brakes and others were optimized for push-pull traffic. In the Soviet occupation zone, the E44s were initially transported to the Soviet Union as reparations and converted to the other track gauge. However, this greatly worsened the running characteristics, which is why most of the E44s were returned in 1952. The modifications were reversed as far as possible and the chassis were painted red so that any cracks could be detected at an early stage. The E44s were now also used for a variety of purposes in the GDR and remained in service in the east of the Federal Republic until after reunification.

About the model: Such an important and outstanding locomotive deserves a correspondingly high-quality model, which Brawa knows how to deliver. Many parts such as the wheels, the frame and the roof lines are very accurately made of metal. Handlebars and other details are very intricate and faithfully reproduced. The period-appropriate lighting, together with the illuminated driver's cab and the engine room, which is also illuminated, make the model an absolute gem. The running gear and roof equipment in particular correspond to the prototype down to the smallest detail. The model is also technically impressive, as it already has a digital decoder and various sound functions. Thanks to the metal parts and the LED lighting, the model is very low-maintenance and durable.
