After the railcars were taken over by the newly founded Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), several design changes were made in the 1950s to make the vehicles, now designated VT60.5, fit for the coming period of service. At the Friedrichshafen depot, the engines were replaced with the 330 hp MAN engines that had already been used in small locomotives of performance group III. The upholstery of the upgraded 3rd to 2nd class also increased passenger comfort. Many railcars also received modern DB lamps in the 1960s for better line visibility and lost the conspicuous railcar lamps of the Reichsbahn era. The uniform purple-red color scheme for DB diesel vehicles soon replaced the old DR color scheme. In contrast to its first home, the DB distributed its 31 VT60.5s to significantly more depots and from then on the Rheine, Darmstadt, Stuttgart, Kassel, Frankfurt-Griesheim, Heilbronn, Nuremberg and Friedrichshafen depots were among the main locations where they were used. Six railcars were leased to the American occupying forces until 1960. With increasing age, the stock of VT60.5s dwindled towards the mid-1960s and the Rheine depot practically became the end-of-service depot for the last old DB railcars. With six vehicles, the stock here was still at its highest at the beginning of the 70s. Four more were still stationed in Nuremberg and one each in Heilbronn and Kassel. By 1972, these 12 railcars, now known as the 660 series for IT purposes, were withdrawn from regular service. Converted to radio measuring cars, the former 660 506 and 660 531 remained in service until 1979. Only VT 60 531 has survived to this day. Only three railcars remained in the Soviet occupation zone after the war: 137 348, 137 366 and 137 387. They were operated from the Aschersleben depot. However, due to the poor spare parts situation, the railcars were all withdrawn from service by 1969. Parallel to the 40 railcars, the procurement plan also provided for suitable VS145 driving trailers, especially for the VT137 347 - 366 and 137 377 - 396. The coaches ordered according to sketch sheet CPost4ivS-36 had 76 3rd class seats, a control compartment in the front end and a mail compartment in the rear end. As the delivery of the driving trailers was largely delayed compared to the VT, the planned combinations were not used from the outset. Rather, use was made of the free use of the VS with other VT types. A total of 10 VS145s are documented for 1952, which were primarily used in combination with VT60.5s.
