Brawa 46830 H0 Luggage Car Pwghs, DB, Ep. III Product Details
About the Model: The Deutsche Bahn Pwghs baggage car in 1:87 scale is a highly detailed replica featuring precisely positioned steps and a realistic braking system. The prototype-accurate interior design ensures an authentic look and allows for a wide range of uses on your model layout.
About the Prototype: The development of the two-axle standard through-cars of the “Austauschbauart” type is closely linked to the emergence of standardization of components in the railroad industry—a key industry of the 1920s. The Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG) had set itself the goal of having railcar components manufactured across companies according to the same specifications and conditions in order to drastically reduce maintenance costs in its own workshops later on and to make components interchangeable. Against this backdrop, the DRG commissioned the Society of German Car Manufacturers (D.W.V.) to develop and deliver the desired standardized through-cars. Thanks to the interchangeable design specification, it was no longer necessary to have approximately 1,400 drawings for each individual car type. Instead, there was a basic type upon which the modified variants were based, using approximately 150 specific drawings. In several delivery batches beginning in 1928, nearly 5,500 cars of the various types—BCi-28, Ci-28, CDi-29, Pwi-28, Ci-29, BCi-29, Pwi-29, Bi-29, and Ci-30 were produced in several delivery batches for passenger service. The cars met the DRG’s expectations. As a result, many older state railway cars and miscellaneous models could be taken out of service. The cars’ ride quality, which was not particularly satisfactory for passengers, quickly earned them the well-known nickname “Donnerbüchsen” (thunderboxes). The turmoil of the war inevitably led to many European railroads subsequently having two-axle standard through-cars in their fleets as well. What they all had in common, however, was that the cars were phased out of general service toward the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. The cars that still exist today enjoy great popularity at various museum railroads both in Germany and abroad.
