Description

Brawa 49323 DB Acid Tank Car Z [P], Era III Product Details

As an example: For a long time, tank cars were unsuitable for transporting corrosive liquids, such as acids. Although tanks with rubber linings were already in use in the 1920s, boxcars were generally used to transport such goods. In doing so, the railcar manufacturers mostly used the standard-type underframe with a wheelbase of 4.00 m or 4.50 m and arranged ten or twelve earthenware pots on it, each with a capacity of 1,000–1,200. The pots are held in place by wooden and rubber spacers, and the box supports are reinforced with diagonal braces. The floor, which is sloped to allow for better drainage of spilled cargo, is partially coated with a bitumen compound or protected with lead sheeting. A wooden walkway runs between the pots. The pots are sealed with rubber or wooden stoppers. A high end wall protects the crew on the brakeman’s platform, which is mandatory for safety cars. Many small and large chemical companies had registered such cars as privately owned with their respective railway administrations. In West Germany, Degussa donated its last pot car to the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum in 1985. On the German State Railways (DR), acid tank cars could still be seen in service as late as 1990; several railfan clubs have preserved cars in their collections, including those in Aschersleben, Magdeburg, and Staßfurt.
