Brawa 50489 Gedeckter Güterwagen Glr 'Wittol', DR, Ep.III Product Details
About the model: BRAWA presents the DR covered freight wagon Glr "Wittol" from Era III. The wagon was manufactured on a scale of 1:87 and impresses with its detailed appearance, with the finest paintwork and lettering. The model has a length of 139.1 mm and has close coupler kinematics and extra brake adjusters.
About the prototype: The German State Railroad Car Association already included a large boxcar in its design, which was used especially for low-weight, high-volume freight. After the DRG was founded, the most important standard freight wagons were redesigned according to the so-called exchange construction principles. The manufacturing tolerances were kept so small that it was possible to replace exchange parts without any problems. The design of the new large-area G-wagon was strongly based on its predecessor. The main dimensions such as wheelbase and length over buffers were adopted, as were the two-metre wide doors opening to the right, although these were installed in a suspended position. New features were the riveted truss, which allowed a lower design of the long girder, and the barrel-shaped roof instead of the cage arch of the predecessor wagons. Some of the wagons had a hand brake with brakeman's cab and/or gauge change wheel sets for the transition to the Russian broad gauge, recognizable by the white-painted buffer sleeves and the secondary class mark "r". All covered wide-gauge wagons were assigned to the "Dresden" class district. As already mentioned, the wagons were particularly suitable for light goods with large volumes (e.g. glass industry). Some changes were made when the design was later revised - for example, longer and softer suspension springs were installed, which allowed higher speeds and thus also use in passenger trains. After 1945, as a result of the turmoil of war, many other European railroads also had coaches of this type in their fleet, in addition to the two German railroad administrations. The last ones only left service in the 1980s - proof of the quality and durability of the design.
