Description

Brawa 50541 Klappdeckelwagen K25 der DB, Ep. III Product Details

About the model: The DB K25 folding lid wagon is from Era III and was produced on a scale of 1:87. In its compact size, the model combines prototypical features with high quality. The wagon has a length of 93 mm and has an extra brake system. The model also has a company number on the brown paintwork.

About the prototype: For the transportation of goods that are sensitive to moisture, such as lime, there were so-called hinged lid cars in various designs on the railroad very early on. The development of this type of wagon led to the K Elberfeld 80 001 ff. in the second half of the 1920s, which met the interchangeable design standard valid at the time and were standardized accordingly. The 8.1 m (without handbrake) and 8.8 m (with handbrake) long wagons were given the short wheelbase of 4 m that was common at the time and could be loaded with up to 17.5 tons. In order to withstand this weight, the side walls and hinged covers were given conspicuously crossed corrugations for reinforcement. Originally painted in RAL 8012 with the chassis and contrasting fittings in RAL 9005, this quickly turned into a light grey haze when loaded with lime. The 991 wagons (delivered until 1933) were also the last series-built hinged lid wagons. Although the hinged lid wagons could be loaded mechanically, they could only be unloaded manually. This circumstance meant that the development of wagons for transporting such goods was already being pursued more in the direction of self-unloading wagons during the Reichsbahn era and there were no more significant new developments after the K25. Nevertheless, the vehicles classified as K25 by the Bundesbahn remained in regular service until the end of the 1960s and were also occasionally used as company cars.
