Description

Brawa 50653 Drehgestellflachwagen SSlu 65 der DR, Ep. III Product Details

About the model: The DR SSlu 65 bogie flat car has the road number "65-20-23" and is a prototypical model from the manufacturer BRAWA. The car is from Era III. In addition to a detailed appearance, the model also has numerous features, such as brake shoes at wheel level, a car floor made of cast zinc, and extra steps and grab irons.

About the prototype: The railroad has always been a means of transportation for large and heavy loads. It was therefore only natural that the K.E.P.V. should devote itself to the development of rail wagons with a larger load capacity from around 1910, following various predecessor designs. In line with the requirements of the time, a type of rail wagon was developed that was designed for a loading length of 18 m and a load weight of up to 35 tons. Between 1912 and 1928, the K.P.E.V. and later the DRG ordered a total of approx. 2650 units of the SSlm (Ce 168) rail car designed according to the Ce 168 pattern sheet. Characteristic of the railcars of that era were the filigree bogie and the car floor made of perforated sheet metal. While most of the cars were only equipped with hand brakes when they were delivered, deliveries to the DRB were already fitted with Kunze-Knorr freight train air brakes ex works. These were retrofitted to many older wagons over the years. The number of vehicles fluctuated over the years. Reparation payments to France and Belgium, as well as Poland, decimated the total stock after the First World War. At the beginning of the 1950s, both German state railroads together still had a stock of around 1,000 SSlm 16 / SSlu. Due to further retirements, the number of operational wagons steadily decreased, so that the last wagons of this type were withdrawn from service in the 1970s.
