Brawa 50746 H0 Gms30 Covered Freight Car, DB, Era IV Product Details
About the Model: Brawa offers the DB Gms 30 covered freight car from Era III in 1:87 scale. The model stands out for its prototypical frame construction and precisely applied details. Equipped with brake shoes at wheel level, this model adds an authentic touch to your model railroad layout.
About the Prototype: The introduction of welding technology in 1933 led the Deutsche Reichsbahn to increasingly switch from riveting to welding the components of its cars. The main advantage of welding was the weight savings, which could be used to increase the load capacity. To meet the demand for higher speeds in general freight transport, the DR began developing the “Gs Oppeln” in 1936. Due to its 6,000 mm wheelbase, its maximum permitted speed was set at 90 km/h. In addition to the elimination of gusset plates made possible by welding technology, this car type differed mainly in its pointed truss, which had become necessary due to the long wheelbase. The sharp increase in demand for freight cars caused by the war led to the series production of the “Gs Oppeln” beginning in 1938. In the years that followed, approximately 28,000 cars without hand brakes and 6,100 cars with hand brakes were produced. Many of the cars were also equipped with steam or even electric heating, allowing them to be used without issue as general-cargo cars on express and high-speed trains. By the end of World War II, the cars were scattered throughout Europe and could be found, for example, in the railway administrations of Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Belgium. The reorganization of rolling stock numbers by the newly formed Deutsche Bundesbahn in the early 1950s resulted in the “Gs Oppeln” being redesignated as “Gms 30.” Some of the cars even entered the EUROP fleet, thereby becoming suitable for international service. With the advent of the first newly built freight cars toward the end of the 1950s, the decision was made against an expensive complete overhaul. The remaining cars were renumbered as “Glms 200” with the introduction of the UIC numbering system and, in isolated cases, remained in service until 1979.
