Brawa 51156 H0 Lightweight Tank Car Z [P], DB, Era III – A Compact Classic of the Uerdingen Design
Would you like to enhance your Era III layout with a typical postwar tank car? The Brawa 51156 Z [P] from the Deutsche Bundesbahn is a prototypically accurate lightweight tank car with a high level of detail—perfect for transporting mineral oil and for realistic operation on main and branch lines.
Sophisticated technology in a compact format
With a length over buffers of 101 mm and NEM-compliant close-coupling kinematics, the car is ideal for mixed freight trains or transfer services. The bogies with three-point suspension, finely engraved details, and brake shoes at wheel level ensure realistic running characteristics. It also features separately applied axle bearing caps, spring assemblies, a braking system, axle brake linkages, and freestanding handrails. Road number: 594 133 [P].
The Prototype – The Uerdingen Lightweight Tank Cars
Starting in 1938, the Uerdingen Car Factory developed an innovative tank car with a 30 m³ tank designed to be self-supporting—that is, without a traditional frame. This design reduced material usage and weight while maintaining a high load-carrying capacity. After World War II, many of these cars entered the DB fleet and were used primarily for transporting petroleum products—including heating oil, fuels, and chemicals.
Typical freight car for the DB in the 1950s and 1960s
The Uerdinger tank car was widely used in Era III—both in block trains and in single-car operations. Thanks to its distinctive, stocky shape, it was a common sight at rail yards, industrial tracks, and on transfer trains.
Ideal for realistic operational dioramas and classic train formations
Combines perfectly with other tank cars, G-cars, open cars, or stake cars. Particularly well-suited for use with BR 50, V60, V100, or E-class locomotives of the E40/E50 series in freight service during the Economic Miracle era.
A model of historical significance for your layout
The Brawa 51156 impresses with its high level of detail and authentic reproduction of a distinctive tank car—a true must-have for Era III fans and operational model railroading enthusiasts.
