A Prototype with History – DRG Skirted Cars

The C4ü-38 model was developed in 1939–1940 as part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s new generation of express train cars. A characteristic feature was the eponymous skirt, which significantly reduced air resistance by covering the underside of the car. A total of 310 cars of this type were built. Many survived World War II and later became part of the Deutsche Bundesbahn fleet. Their elegant design and technical advancements made the “skirted cars” the most modern passenger cars of their time.
