Brawa 70067 steam locomotive 001 199-9, DB, Ep.IV, AC-Sound-Extra Product Details
From 1958, the Bundesbahn equipped 50 class 01 locomotives with the so-called type I high-performance boiler. The boiler type, designed according to the construction principles of Friedrich Witte, had already been used successfully on the BR 01.10 Bundesbahn locomotives.
At 1:8.8, the fully welded boiler had a significantly better ratio of radiant to tubular heating surface (old boiler 1:13.54), which was mainly achieved by the built-in combustion chamber. In mathematical terms, this means 54 m² less evaporation surface for the high-efficiency boiler, which was compensated for by an 18 kg/m²h higher heating surface load. This meant that the same boiler output could be achieved with significantly lower fuel consumption.
The locomotives looked much more modern and tidier as a result of the conversion to the high-performance boiler and were given a number of modifications to improve work safety. The layout was made clearer. The sandbox on top of the boiler disappeared. The circulation apron gave way to a wide circulation plate, and handle bars were integrated into the draft deflector plates.
The Knorr surface preheater was replaced by a type 57 mixed preheater system. The 01 217 and 223 locomotives were equipped with roller bearings in the driving and coupling rods on a trial basis, similar to the 01.10 series. In operation, the locomotives continued to be used together with old boiler locomotives from traditional depots. It was not until the discontinuation of steam locomotive maintenance at the Hof depot in 1973 that the use of the two 01 variants at DB came to an end.
