Prototype-accurate car for heavy bulk cargo containers

The prototype for this car arose from a specific need in modern freight transport. To transport heavy bulk cargo containers, the freight car leasing company AAE—which is now part of VTG—required four-axle container cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons. The existing 60-foot Sgns 60 units were only partially suitable for this purpose because, when loaded with spoil dumpsters, the middle loading position would have had to remain unoccupied. Therefore, it was decided to shorten older Sgns 60 units and return them to service as Sgmmns 173 with a useful length of only 40 feet.

The four-axle cars can each carry one 40-foot or 30-foot container, or two 20-foot containers. This resulted in a car that is flexibly tailored to various transport tasks. The new cars were initially deployed in construction site logistics around the Stuttgart 21 project. There, trains transported the excavated material to destinations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt.
