To transport heavy bulk cargo containers, the freight car leasing company AAE—which is now part of VTG—required four-axle container carrier cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons. With the existing 60-foot Sgns 60 units in the fleet, the middle compartment would have had to remain empty when loaded with spoil skips. Therefore, it was decided to shorten older Sgns 60 cars and put them back into service as Sgmmns 173 with a usable length of only 40 feet.

The four-axle cars can each carry one 40-foot or 30-foot container, or two 20-foot containers. This resulted in a car that could be used flexibly for various transport tasks. The new cars were initially deployed in construction site logistics around the Stuttgart 21 project. Trains transported the excavated material to locations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. This area of application alone demonstrates how closely the prototype is linked to current infrastructure projects and modern logistics.
