The decline in traffic on the Deutsche Reichsbahn drove the decommissioning of many locomotives. The class 118, which had been indispensable just a short time before, was hit hardest. The increasing electrification of the DR had also led to a decline in the use of 118s in the preceding years. However, some locomotives of the former V 180, renamed class 228 on January 1, 1992, were to be used on the steep lines in Thuringia in the longer term. A few class 228.6-8 locomotives were preserved by DB AG until 1998.
