From the mid-1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn procured a total of 942 locomotives of the V 60/V 60.1 series for light and medium shunting service. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series is the higher friction load of the BR 261. In the course of a remotorization with Caterpillar engines from the mid-1990s, some machines were reclassified as the 363 series. After being taken out of service, many units were sold to private and works railroads in Germany and abroad.
