In May 1989, 1044.202 was delivered to ÖBB by SGP-Graz. The electrical part was supplied by Siemens. It is one of the five locomotives that were painted in the so-called chessboard design.
The 1044 series is a universal electric locomotive that is suitable for both heavy express train and freight train services in the lowlands as well as on mountain routes. At the time it was put into service, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world and the showpiece of the Austrian Federal Railways until the Taurus was purchased.
