Many small mechanical components work together inside a model railway locomotive. Axles rotate in bearings, gears transmit motor power and, on steam locomotives, coupling rods, connecting rods and other joints move continuously while the locomotive runs. At the points intended by the manufacturer, a suitable lubricant reduces friction and supports smooth mechanical operation.

This does not mean that every moving component automatically requires oil. Modern locomotives use different constructions, materials and lubrication concepts. Some bearing points are lubricated with oil, while certain gears or worm drives require special gear grease. Other components must remain completely dry.

The operating instructions and lubrication diagram for the specific locomotive are therefore always the most important reference. A lubrication point on one locomotive does not automatically exist in the same location on another model.

Correct dosing is especially important. A model railway locomotive does not need a visible pool of oil. At many lubrication points, a very small quantity is sufficient. The lubricant is then distributed by carefully moving the mechanism.

Excess oil can attract dust, reach wheel treads or traction tyres and spread to areas inside the vehicle where lubricant is not required. Lubrication should therefore always be precise rather than generous.

Oiling should also not be treated as a quick solution for every running problem. If a locomotive jerks or runs unevenly, first check whether the wheels and track are clean, whether foreign material is caught in the mechanism or whether lubrication is actually required.

Do Not Simply Mix Oil and Grease

Oiling Steam Locomotives: Coupling Rods and Valve Gear

Steam locomotive models often have more visible moving joints than modern diesel or electric locomotives. Their external mechanism therefore requires particularly careful handling.

Coupling rods, connecting rods and their bearing points move with every wheel rotation. On some models, specific joints are explicitly identified as lubrication points.

A precision oiler is especially useful here because its fine tip can reach the intended bearing point directly. A large drop is undesirable because it can run across the wheels, rods and painted surfaces while also attracting dust.

After lubrication, the valve gear should be moved carefully. Avoid applying sideways pressure to the fine rods.

Tank locomotives and tender locomotives may also contain internal gears, motor bearings or axle bearings. These maintenance points depend entirely on the locomotive's construction.

High-quality sound locomotives may additionally contain speakers, decoders, light guides and fine wiring. Their housings should therefore only be opened as far as described by the manufacturer.
