The SPW-40 of the DDR-NVA was an armored personnel carrier (APC) that corresponded to the Soviet BRT-40. This vehicle was developed in 1947 as the GAZ-40 or Object-141 and went into serial production from 1950 onwards. It was designed to support the concept of mechanized infantry. The BTR-40 was a light, 2-axle vehicle with a chassis based on the GAZ-63 truck. It was utilized for various purposes such as reconnaissance and transport. The crew consisted of a driver, commander, and eight soldiers. The vehicle was equipped with armor and a 7.62-mm machine gun and was also used in other countries of the Warsaw Pact. The NVA received its first SPW-40s in 1957 and operated them until 1981.
