Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg is an exceptionally large model railway and miniature exhibition in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt. Since opening in August 2001, the layout has continued to grow. Instead of one single model railway board, visitors encounter independent countries, regions and fantasy worlds connected by railway lines, roads, waterways, landscapes and technical systems.
Most of the miniature world is built in H0 scale, or 1:87. Classic passenger trains, modern high-speed trains, regional trains, freight trains and narrow-gauge railways operate on the layout. At the same time, cars, fire engines, ships and aircraft move through the scenes. A regularly repeating day-and-night cycle changes the atmosphere of the landscapes and brings illuminated cities, stations, funfairs and emergency scenes to life.
What makes the Wunderland special is not its size alone. Each theme world consists of many small stories. Visitors discover construction sites, weddings, accidents, concerts, demonstrations, holiday scenes, fire brigade operations and humorous details. Many actions can be triggered by push buttons. This makes the Wunderland suitable for families as well as for model railway enthusiasts who want to study track construction, scenery design, digital control or realistic operating sequences.
Large exhibition layouts show relationships that can hardly be recognised on individual product images. These include believable transitions between town and landscape, the placement of tunnels and bridges, the effect of long trains and the layering of different height levels. Road traffic, lighting, background design and small everyday scenes can also be viewed from different perspectives.

Each section has its own landscape, architecture and traffic atmosphere. The theme worlds show real regions as well as fictional cities and technically demanding showpieces.
This early layout section combines low mountain ranges, stations, fields, villages and fast main lines. For your own layout, it shows how classic railway landscapes can be combined with dense train operation and varied vegetation.

Alpine landscapes, tunnels, bridges and railway lines on steep slopes show how mountains can look convincing on limited space. Different height levels extend the visible routes and create impressive sight lines.
Harbour, Speicherstadt, stations, bridges and well-known buildings recreate the Hanseatic city in miniature. This section is a model for urban layouts with dense traffic, water surfaces, brick architecture and many figures.
Wide landscapes, Las Vegas, deserts, mountains and long freight trains convey a North American railway atmosphere. Broad curves, strong colours and long train formations make this world clearly different from European model railway layouts.
Snow, rocks, harbours and a large water surface with moving ships define this section. For model builders, water design, winter scenery, coastal vegetation and the combination of railway and shipping are especially interesting.

The model airport combines taxiing aircraft, take-offs and landings, service vehicles, lighting and airport architecture. The interplay of mechanics, computer control and precise landscape design is a technical highlight.
Rome, Tuscany, coastal landscapes, Mount Vesuvius and Venetian canals show Mediterranean architecture and densely designed city scenes. Different plaster colours, facades, squares, figures and water surfaces create a particularly lively effect.
Beaches, densely built slopes, carnival and famous landmarks shape the Brazilian metropolis. The section shows how colourful architecture, large groups of figures and landscape height differences form a coherent overall picture.
Wide landscapes, mountains, glaciers and South American railway operation create a strong contrast to dense cities. Open spaces and deliberately placed focal points make the miniature world appear larger.
Monaco combines a dynamic Formula 1 track with harbour, city and rocky coast. Provence adds Mediterranean landscapes and rural scenes. The interaction of moving vehicles in a confined space is especially impressive.
Behind the visible landscape is a complex interaction of tracks, feedback systems, computers, lighting, mechanics and regular maintenance.
Numerous trains run according to programmed sequences through visible lines and large hidden yards. Feedback modules detect vehicles, routes are secured and train movements are coordinated.
Start with clearly separated blocks and easily accessible storage tracks. A reliable power supply is more important than overly complicated automation.
The lighting regularly changes between day and night. Street lights, houses, vehicles and special lighting effects create a completely new layout atmosphere.
Do not illuminate every window in the same way. Different brightness levels, some dark rooms and warm light colours look much more realistic.
Cars, buses, trucks and emergency vehicles move through Knuffingen and other areas. Distances, crossings and stops are technically controlled.
Moving vehicles work best on a few carefully planned routes. A station forecourt, city centre or fire brigade operation are suitable compact motifs.
At the airport, take-off, landing and ground traffic are combined. In Scandinavia, ships move on real water. Both systems require specially developed mechanics and control systems.
Small airfields, harbours and canals can look believable even without full automation. Suitable buildings, vehicles, figures and clear operating sequences are decisive.
The exhibition mainly uses H0 scale. However, scenic and operational principles can be transferred to almost all model railway gauges.

Plan Your Visit OfficiallyThe entire exhibition cannot be copied at home. Individual design principles, however, work very well on small layouts, modules and dioramas.
Decide on a recognisable motif: Alpine railway, harbour, airport, big city, American line or a small station with moving road traffic.
Track radii, points, train lengths, hidden yard and maintenance access must be clear before mountains and buildings are permanently installed.
Foreground, middle level and background create depth. Tunnels, bridges and roads should develop logically from the terrain.
Figures, vehicles, light and small actions bring a layout to life. A few well-composed scenes are stronger than randomly distributed accessories.
Moving models immediately attract attention. On a small layout, a moving bus, an illuminated fire engine, a moving fairground attraction or an automatically controlled shuttle line is often enough. Reliable access to the technology and separate testing of each function before final installation are important.
Illuminated windows, platforms, streets and vehicles fundamentally change a model railway. Use warm and cold light colours deliberately. Residential buildings, commercial buildings, workshops and railway facilities need different brightness levels.
A group of waiting travellers, a roadside operation, a market stall or hikers in the mountains give meaning to a layout section. Figures should match the era, the surroundings and the action being shown.
