Piko 21782 H0 Electric Locomotive BR E17 123, DR, Ep. III Product Details

Piko 21782 H0 Electric Locomotive Class E17 No. 123 DR, Era III

The Piko 21782 H0 Class E17 123 Electric Locomotive represents a special electric locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn from Era III. The prototype, E17 123, was one of only two locomotives of this class that were transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn after World War II. After its return from the Soviet Union, the locomotive was put back into service in 1957 and subsequently operated on the electrified network in central Germany, pulling passenger trains until 1968. Piko captures this special variant with numerous specific details and produces it as an H0-scale model for the 2L DC system.

E17 123: The Deutsche Reichsbahn Prototype

The Piko 21782 centers on the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s E17 123. Its history after World War II makes this locomotive particularly interesting within the series. Along with just one other locomotive, the E17 123 was transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn. After its return from the Soviet Union, it was put back into service in 1957.

Until 1968, the E17 123 was in service on the electrified rail network in central Germany, where it was used to haul passenger trains. Thanks to this clear historical context, the model can be specifically used in Deutsche Reichsbahn train formations from Era III.

Characteristic Details of the DR Version

The Piko E17 123 features numerous details tailored to the depicted version. These include the original DRG lamp design, which defines the locomotive’s appearance. This design is complemented by fine roof walkways.

Other separately molded details include oil cans, electrical outlets, handrails, and brake shoe holders. These individual components contribute to the detailed design of the H0 model and highlight the unique features of the E17 123.

Grooved Insulators and Roof Details

The model also features specific characteristics in the roof area, including SBS 10 grooved insulators with a transverse axis. Together with the fine roof walkways, this creates a roof design tailored to the locomotive depicted.

In addition, the model features SIFA cables and windshield wipers in the DR configuration. In this way, the Piko 21782 incorporates further characteristic features of this E17 variant. The combination of headlight design, roof details, wiring, and separately attached components defines the depicted Deutsche Reichsbahn version from Era III.

Lighting with Additional Functions

The Piko 21782 features LED lighting with a red-to-white light cycle. Additionally, digitally controllable cab lighting and digitally controllable engine room lighting are included. This means the model offers additional lighting functions beyond the standard light cycle.

PluX22 is available as the interface. The DC version offered is not digitally equipped and does not feature sound. The power system is specified as 2L DC.

For passenger trains of Era III

According to prototype specifications, the E17 123 was used to haul passenger trains on the electrified network in central Germany until 1968. This makes the model ideal for appropriately configured passenger trains of the Deutsche Reichsbahn from Era III.

The length over buffers is 183 mm. The minimum curve radius is specified as 358 mm. Regarding the coupling system, the locomotive features a NEM-compliant coupling box with KK kinematics. This provides the essential technical specifications for integrating the model into an H0 layout.

A Special Electric Locomotive for the DR Fleet

The Piko 21782 combines the unique history of the E17 123 with a highly detailed model design. Original DRG lamp design, fine roof walkways, separate lubrication reservoirs, power outlets, handrails, and tail light holders are all included, as are grooved insulators with SBS 10 transverse axes, SIFA cables, and DR-style windshield wipers.

Together with the LED lighting, the red-and-white light sequence, the digitally controllable cab and engine room lighting, and the PluX22 interface, the Piko 21782 offers an interesting combination of historical authenticity and technical features. The E17 123 thus adds a distinctive electric locomotive with a unique prototype history to the H0 fleet of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era III.
