Piko 59722 Diesel locomotive V 200 033 "Museum version", Ep. VI - A classic of the German Federal Railroad in perfect model reproduction
The Piko 59722 Diesel Locomotive V 200 033 "Museum Version", Ep. VI is a detailed model of one of the most famous diesel locomotives of the German Federal Railroad. This iconic locomotive, which has been preserved as the V200 033, is now maintained as a museum locomotive in Hamm. Piko has realized this locomotive with the highest precision for model railway layouts, including digital control and extensive sound functions to make operation as authentic as possible. The model impresses with numerous details, such as the red/white light change and finely crafted running gear details, which make it a highlight on any H0 layout.
Prototype: The V200 - A legend on German rails
The V 200 was built in 81 units between 1956 and 1957, with 20 locomotives being produced by MaK (V 200 006 to 025) and 61 by Krauss-Maffei (V 200 026 to 086). The V 200 series was the flagship of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and was mainly used for long-distance passenger services. The first five pre-series locomotives (V 200 001 to 005) were built as early as 1953/1954. These diesel locomotives were a technical masterpiece of the post-war period and significantly shaped the image of the Deutsche Bundesbahn in Era III.
In the early days, the V200 locomotives were mainly used for long-distance passenger trains. However, with the increasing electrification of the rail networks, they had to move to shorter routes and freight traffic. Their twin-engine concept was innovative, but entailed high maintenance costs. From 1977, the V200 locomotives were increasingly concentrated in railroad depots in the north of Germany before they were finally taken out of service in 1984.
International operations and the fate of the V200
Some of the decommissioned V200s found a second life abroad. In the 1980s, seven of them were sold to the Swiss Federal Railways, where they were mainly used in freight and construction train services. However, the high maintenance costs also became apparent in Switzerland, which is why the locomotives were finally retired in 1997 and sold to private owners in Germany. In France, the private railroad construction company Dehé-Montcocol bought four class V200 locomotives from Deutsche Bahn and used them to build a railroad line in Algeria. Their end came in 1996 when the operating license expired and the locomotives were scrapped in 1997.
The model: Piko V 200 033 as a museum locomotive
The model of the Piko 59722 V 200 033 represents the museum version of the locomotive, which can be admired today in Hamm. Piko has faithfully reproduced the locomotive in its original condition. The fine running gear details and the filigree attachments are particularly impressive. These features make the model interesting not only for operation but also for the display case. With a length over buffers of 213 mm, the locomotive is ideal for H0 layouts and meets the high demands of modern model railroaders.
The model has excellent technical features: a digital decoder ensures smooth operation on digital layouts, and the integrated sound functions authentically reproduce the characteristic humming of the diesel engines on the model railway layout. The red/white light change is realized by long-life LEDs and provides additional authenticity in operation. The model is also equipped with a Plux22 interface, which enables flexible use.
