PIKO 97531 H0 Electric locomotive EP09 015, PKP, Ep. V, DC sound
At the end of the 1980s, the Polish State Railways (PKP) faced the challenge of modernizing the fast passenger service between important metropolises such as Warsaw and Krakow. The existing EP05 series, which had evolved from the EU05, was not sufficient in terms of numbers and was technically outdated. In order to meet the growing requirements, the Pafawag factory in Wroclaw developed a new locomotive type with the designation 104E, which was put into service under the series designation EP09.
Development and use of the EP09
The first examples of the new locomotive series fully lived up to expectations. The EP09 was specially designed for speeds of up to 160 km/h and proved to be extremely reliable in daily operation. Between its introduction and 1997, a total of 45 machines of this series were delivered to the PKP. Thanks to its performance and availability, the EP09 almost completely displaced the older EP05 from service and was from then on used throughout the country in high-quality passenger transportation.
Realized prototypically with digital sound and light
The model of the PIKO 97531 electric locomotive EP09 015 impresses with numerous digital functions. A PluX22 sound decoder is installed at the factory which, in combination with the PIKO TrainSound® system, provides a realistic soundscape. This allows model railroaders to experience the typical sound characteristics of the EP09 directly on their layout. In addition to the sound, the model also offers digitally switchable lighting functions, including cab and engine room lighting.
Detailing and high-quality equipment
The locomotive has prototypical paintwork and precise printing, making the model a visual highlight. Two delicate metal scissor pantographs adorn the roof and emphasize the authentic overall impression. The technical details are also correct: The PIKO 97531 has an NEM 658 PluX22 interface, a built-in PluX22 sound decoder and a close coupling set with NEM shaft. The lights change in white and red depending on the direction of travel.
Optimized for Era V direct current systems
With its length over buffers of 193 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the locomotive is suitable for use on a large number of H0 DC layouts. The digitally switchable light functions, including the driver's desk lighting, offer additional possibilities for realistic layout operation. The PIKO 97531 is ideal for model railroaders aged 14 and over who value an authentic reproduction of modern Eastern European locomotive technology.
